GOA Files FOIA Request re DHS’ “Disinformation Governance Board”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 5, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) asking key questions in response to the Biden Administration’s plans to create a “Disinformation Governance Board.”

In Congressional hearings this past April, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that DHS was in the process of creating a Disinformation Governance Board. Soon after, the public found out that the Board will be chaired by left-wing dystopian author Nina Jankowicz.

GOA and GOF’s FOIA request demands specific records related to:

  • The processes used to select members of the Board and its staff

  • The methods, rules, procedures, or limitations on how the Board will surveil the American people

  • How any purported “disinformation” will be corrected, limited, refuted, or removed, and its purveyors sanctioned, intimidated, punished, fact-checked, or otherwise policed by the Board

  • Whether Elon Musk’s offer or attempt to purchase Twitter was considered in establishing the Board

  • Conversations regarding the proposed Board between DHS personnel and specific individuals including Mark Zuckerberg, Barack Obama, the National Security Agency, and news networks

Erich Pratt, GOA’s Senior Vice President, issued the following statement:

“Once again, this administration is orchestrating not-so-subtle actions to restrict the Constitutional rights of Americans, especially those who disagree with the Left’s radical agenda. This direct threat on our First Amendment rights can be viewed as nothing more than a precursor to further chip away at our Second Amendment rights. We look forward to reviewing the records from this FOIA request to expose this proposed Ministry of Truth for what it really is — a political attempt to silence dissenting views.”
