Monroe County man shoots at reported burglars

HATLEY – A Monroe County resident reportedly took matters into his own hands Monday night when he got home and found someone had broken in.

According to Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell, a residence on Parham Store Road a few miles north of Hatley was broken into, and when the homeowner arrived home, the alleged thieves ran out the back door.

Cantrell said the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot at them as they ran into the woods.

Cantrell said deputies arrived at the scene about three to four minutes after the 911 call and searched the woods to see if anyone had been shot. He said some stolen guns were recovered from the home.

According to the sheriff, nobody with gunshot wounds linked to the case has been treated at any local hospital. However, the homeowner was injured on broken glass from where the people apparently broke in. He was treated at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Cantrell said the sheriff’s department is interviewing suspects at this time.
