GOA Celebrates Senate Repeal of VA Fiduciary Gun Control Rule

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 25, 2023

Washington, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Senate passed the GOA-backed S. Amdt. 1354 to H.R. 4366 to defund the near three-decade old rule which took guns away from veterans with fiduciaries managing their VA benefits. A nearly identical, GOA-backed amendment passed the House of Representatives in July.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) has been leading the fight for decades to repeal this awful rule, which has allowed bureaucrats to disarm over 260,000 veterans since the Clinton Administration. Among other efforts, GOA has:

  • Fought back against the inclusion of VA fiduciary records into NICS since the background check system was created.
  • Helped pass the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act in the 115th Congress.
  • Lobbied the Trump Administration to act by executive order and formally petitioned the VA to begin the rulemaking process.
  • Helped ensure passage of this amendment in both the House and the Senate VA funding bills in this Congress.

Aidan Johnston, GOA’s Director of Federal Affairs, issued the following statement:

“This is a great day for veterans and for the Second Amendment. GOA has been at the forefront of this fight for decades, and we thank Sen. Kennedy and Rep. Bost for their leadership on the issue. In turn, we urge both chambers to maintain this amendment to block the fiduciary rule as they negotiate final passage of any VA funding bill.”

GOA spokesmen are available for interviews.  Gun Owners of America is a nonprofit grassroots lobbying organization dedicated to protecting the right to keep and bear arms without compromise. GOA represents over two million members and activists. For more information, visit GOA’s Press Center.
