Republicans, Democrats Join Together to Introduce Gun Control

Tell the Senate to stop trying to “fix” an unconstitutional system

Anti-gun Senator Chris Murphy says, “The Fix NICS Act is the most important piece of bipartisan gun legislation since Manchin-Toomey…. Reforms aren’t window dressing. Big deal.”

The GOP should move pro-gun bills

Finally, the Republicans seem motivated to “do something.”

Sadly, this motivation is to further strengthen existing gun controls, rather than to repeal current restrictions our gun rights.

Republican Senator John Cornyn (TX) has teamed up with anti-gun Sens. Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) to introduce a bill that, according to congress.gov, would “enforce current law regarding the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.”

Republican Senators Dean Heller (NV) and Tim Scott (SC) have joined Sen. Cornyn in cosponsoring this bill as well.

The three Republicans on this bill are pushing it because they want to clean up the NICS system to prevent good people from being denied — which has been a problem, as GOA documented in our alert earlier this week.

And to their credit, that would be a laudable goal — if you believe that law-abiding citizens should prove their innocence to the government and pass background checks before exercising a constitutional right.

On the other hand, if you realize that background checks are an “infringement” and that they are unconstitutional, then you will NOT want to fix a broken system.

You will want to repeal the unconstitutional infringement.

After all, if a robber holds you up and takes $100 — and you protest that now you don’t have money to get home — does the robber really do you a favor if he gives you $20 for a cab ride?

No, he never should have taken your money in the first place!

Put simply, a broken system can’t be fixed — especially one that is a glaring infringement of the Second Amendment.

GOA opposed the original Brady bill, and we certainly oppose any “NICS Fix” proposed by Democrats and Republicans. That’s why I wrote this open letter to the Republican leadership urging them to scrap gun control and prioritize pro-gun bills in the Senate.

Gun-hating Sen. Murphy is bragging on Twitter that, “The Fix NICS Act is the most important piece of bipartisan gun legislation since Manchin-Toomey…. Reforms aren’t window dressing. Big deal.”

Senator Murphy likes this bill because more names are going to be added into the NICS system.  But more names mean that more good people can be erroneously denied — because they have the same name as a bad guy — or, as happened to 257,000 military veterans, they are people who should not be in the system in the first place.

This is why I need your help to multiply our pressure in the Senate. Please contact your Senators to make the pro-gun agenda a priority again.

So yes, Republicans need to “do something” about guns!

They need to act on pro-gun bills like concealed carry reciprocity, the suppressor deregulation, restoring veterans’ gun rights, and the Buck Restoration of Rights Amendment.

Again, please take action today, and urge your Senators NOT to cosponsor the Cornyn-Murphy-Feinstein bill.

Sincerely,
