Political Sausage-Making at its Worst

Among the 50 states in the Union, few are in as good a position as Idaho to make dramatic improvements in protecting the Second Amendment.

Republicans have 4-1 majorities in the House and Senate; and they control the Governor’s Mansion, as well.

So you would think that pro-gun legislation would breeze through to the Governor’s desk, right?

Well, that’s where we have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that House Bill 89, which would make the Gem State the seventh “constitutional carry” state in the country, has been referred to the State Affairs Committee.

The concept of “constitutional carry” is simple:  An individual’s ability to exercise Second Amendment rights shouldn’t depend on a “permit” from the government.

You don’t need a government license to write a book.  So why should you have to get the government’s okay in order to carry a firearm to protect yourself and your family?

The bad news is this:  According to the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance (ISAA), the bill is being held up in committee by Chairman Tom Loertscher (R-32).

There are House members who have told ISAA that they would love to push the bill, but the Republican leadership in the House will not allow it.

And all fingers point to Rep. Loertscher as the problem.

So this is where you come in.  As long as Rep. Loertscher and the rest of the Republican leadership think that no one is watching them — because they are keeping everyone in the dark — then they will feel free to ignore the will of the people.

But that all changes when we turn on the lights!

So let’s do that together.  Idaho is one of the most pro-gun states in the Union.  And there’s no reason why the Gem State shouldn’t become the next one to adopt constitutional carry.

Dear Rep. Loertscher:

I agree with Gun Owners of America that HB 89 is one of the most important bills in the Idaho legislature right now.

But from what I’m hearing, there are no plans on your part to move this legislation.  Why is that?

The concept of “constitutional carry” is simple:  An individual’s ability to exercise Second Amendment rights shouldn’t depend on a “permit” from the government.

I don’t need a government license to write a book.  So why should I have to get the government’s okay in order to carry a firearm to protect myself and my family?

Given that you are the Chairman of the State Affairs Committee which has jurisdiction over HB 89, I would ask you to bring up this bill for committee vote and to send it to the full House.

Please let me know what you intend to do.

Sincerely,
