Prosecute True Threats of Mass Violence
“He was previously known to law enforcement.” The American People are sick of reading these words. It’s predicable—almost like clockwork—that as we learn more about a mass killer we will also learn that the threat of mass public violence was known, was credible, and went unchecked for far too long. Look no further than the mass public murders of Parkland, Uvalde, Lewiston, and now Apalachee High School. Contrary to what the gun control lobby might propose, we should not blame the gun and gun confiscation laws are not the solution.
We must secure our schools but also, we must not allow would-be mass murderers to make serious threats of violence without consequence. As it turns out, there are laws in every state to deal with these threats of violence and they are already working! In just this past month over two dozen school shootings were stopped!

State & Federal Law Enforcement Failed to Stop The Apalachee High School Killer but Congress Can Help Next Time
It is critical that police enforce the laws we already have against making “true threats.” Here are 19 examples of law enforcement preventing mass public violence by arresting and prosecuting dangerous individuals for making “true threats” against schools in just ONE MONTH preceding the Apalachee High School attack:
9/4 – Juvenile arrested, charged in connection to social media threat (Randolph County, AR)
9/3 – 11-year-old charged with making threat to elementary school (Georgetown County, SC)
9/3 – Teen arrested after faking school threat to extend holiday break (Tulare County, CA)
8/30 – Student arrested, accused of threatening to shoot up school (Shreveport, LA)
8/30 – Man arrested for threatening to ‘shoot up’ two Memphis schools, tied to prior murder (Memphis, TN)
8/30 – One arrested Thursday in ‘potential shooter’ incident at Kickapoo Nation School (Powhattan, KS)

8/12 – 15-Year-Old Girl Charged with Making Shooting Threat on First Day of School (Tampa, FL)
8/9 – Teen Arrested for Making Threat (Jackson County, TN)
These are 19 success stories. In the span of one month, 19 mass public murders were stopped by law enforcement. Unlike “red flag” laws which confiscate firearms but allow dangerous individuals to roam society freely and to obtain other weapons, this works. Prosecuting bad actors who make serious threats of harm helps make society a safer place.
Gun Owners of America previously advocated for the prosecution of true threats as a constitutional law enforcement tool to combat threats of mass violence.
