How is Your Congressman Doing?

by Gun Owners of America

(July 16, 1998) As election time draws near, elected Representatives start going to folks like you to ask for money and votes. Of course, they also start coming to us at GOA to find out how they’ve voted on gun-related issues. Well, GOA has established a file on its website- at – to give you the ammunition you need to lobby your Congressmen. This information not only tells you how they’ve voted on gun-related issues so far this Congress, it also lets you know if they’ve cosponsored the Top Four Gun Bills in Congress.

Yesterday, Gun Owners of America sent a letter to every Representative’s office to let them know they can read their vote rating on the GOA web page. While this information might create some wailing and gnashing of teeth in these offices, our efforts will be greatly multiplied if YOU let your Rep. know that you’re disappointed with his voting record. This lets him know that you’re watching how he votes – essential if we’re going to ever keep Congressmen accountable.

Quite frankly, there are very few Representatives that don’t need to receive the letter below. (They’re listed below.) Only one Representative, Ron Paul of Texas, has both a perfect voting record on all the issues and has cosponsored the Top Four Gun Bills. And, only five other congressmen have joined Rep. Paul in cosponsoring ALL of these four bills – the Citizen’s Self- Defense Act (H.R. 27); the Lautenberg Gun Ban repeal (H.R. 1009); the semi-auto ban repeal (H.R. 1147); and the Brady Instant Registration Check repeal (H.R. 2721). Everyone else could stand to hear from their constituents. So please fax, mail or email the letter below to your Rep. today! (Contact info is available on the GOA website.)

Representatives who have cosponsored the Top Four Gun Bills and DO NOT need to get the letter below:

Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA)
Rep. Ron Lewis (R-KY)
Rep. Tom Coburn (R-OK)
Rep. Virgil Goode (D-VA)
Rep. Ralph Hall (D-TX)
Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)
Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-WY)

Dear Representative

I hope you will take a look at the Web page of Gun Owners of America and check out your voting record on gun related issues. (You can go to the URL at to see this vote rating.) It shows that you have less than a perfect rating this session.

Moreover, it also shows that you have not cosponsored all of the pro-gun legislation that has been introduced this year. I hope you will review the bills that are posted there and sign your name to any of the bills you have not yet cosponsored. Thank you.
