As early as this week, the state Senate could vote on whether to override Governor Maggie Hassan’s veto of Senate Bill 116, the constitutional carry legislation.

While the override is not expected to be successful, it is nevertheless important. This is because our vote on the override will serve as a benchmark for efforts in 2017, after we have thrown Hassan out of office and face the prospect of a more pro-gun governor.

As you remember, the concept of “constitutional carry” is simple: It is that you shouldn’t need the government’s permission to exercise your constitutional right to carry a firearm to protect yourself and your family.

Already, “constitutional carry” is the law of the land in Vermont, Maine, Arkansas, Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Wyoming and most of Montana. And, generally speaking, these are some of the safest places in the country.

Like most of these states, Granite Staters would still have the option of applying for a concealed carry license for purposes of reciprocity.

But you wouldn’t have to have a license in order to carry concealed.

ACTION: Contact your state senator and ask him or her to vote to override Governor Maggie Hassan’s veto of Senate Bill 116, the constitutional carry legislation.
