President Clinton and four congressional leaders, including Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), made it clear today that the omnibus anti-gun bill stalled in the conference committee will stay there a while longer.

“This is entirely due to the efforts of members of GOA, particularly in Utah, who have put the heat on Sen. Hatch to stop him from supporting his gun-control-laden Juvenile Justice bill,” said Larry Pratt, GOA Executive Director.

However, at his news conference today, he maneuvered to keep his options open. On the one hand, he is stopping his anti-gun rights Juvenile Justice bill. On the other hand he made it clear that he would vote for all but one of the anti-gun rights provisions if he felt he could get away with it.

“This means that the battle is not over. GOA will continue to urge its members to keep the heat on Sen. Hatch.

“Sen. Hatch’s concern, although unspoken, is that he must face a Republican nominating convention on May 6. That is why he did not go along with President Clinton today,” Pratt said.
