Spare us the outraged gun lecture, President Drone

On Wednesday, President Obama scolded the Senate for letting children die because they had voted down a completely meaningless background check law for gun purchases — a provision that would not have prevented any of the mass shootings that have occurred in the U.S. since 2003 (and possibly even earlier ).

On the same day, his administration announced it would not provide a witness to defend or explain the legality of his targeted assassination program before a U.S. Senate subcommittee that had requested such a witness. Weeks earlier, and after Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s drone-related filibuster, McClatchy reported on the Obama administration’s lack of candor as to precisely whom they target for death with unmanned drones.

Obama’s drones have, by independent estimates, killed a greater number of civilians — possibly far greater — than the entire death toll from mass shootings in the U.S. since he took office. Yet instead of opening up about his administration’s lusty embrace of targeted killings, Obama has decided to preoccupy himself with a problem that that empirically does not exist — of malevolent, insane people circumventing background checks through private sales and then going on killing sprees.
