Hon. Bob Barr
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Rep. Barr:

Since the Judiciary Committee will soon be considering the Lautenberg ban, I hope you will consider introducing an amendment to strengthen H.R. 26. I think it's imperative that we fully repeal the ban, and not leave any precedent in the federal code where citizens can be denied their rights based on just a mere misdemeanor.

As you know, this ban has been plagued by many "unintended consequences." Many GOA members have already related to us their horror stories:

* A young man in Ohio can never own a gun or become a cop because he got into a screaming match with his dad 10 years ago. His dad wanted to teach him a lesson and got him thrown in the slammer for the night. But then, officials hit him with a domestic violence misdemeanor -- over the objections of the father. Now the son is disarmed for life and is unable to pursue his dream of becoming a law enforcement officer.

* Several years ago, another GOA member slapped her husband in anger -- in front of the police. Now this Georgia woman has a domestic violence misdemeanor and is disarmed for life.

The list goes on and on. As evidenced by the Wall Street Journal on December 23, 1996, even parents who spank their children can now fall subject to this gun ban. Unfortunately, your bill (H.R. 26) would only correct the problem for past offenders, leaving many women, future cops, parents, etc. in a lurch. The above examples would be just as outrageous if they happened five years from now.

As I talk to people outside the beltway, there is an intense desire to repeal this entire law. Thus, I think a vote on a full repeal is imperative. Even if it fails, it will at least put members on record, and let the people know which of their Representatives are upholding the Constitution.

Please let me know if you will consider such an amendment in the full committee. I would look forward to working with you on this. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Larry Pratt
Executive Director
