Man fatally shot during attempted liquor store robbery identified

A man who police say was shot and killed while attempting to rob a liquor store Friday night has been identified.

The shooting happened just before 11 p.m. Friday at the Liquor World on Goldsmith Lane in the Bashford Manor area.

Police said the shooting was a result of a robbery gone wrong.

According to police, the clerk at the store fired several shots at Abulaila, who had displayed a weapon in an attempt to rob the store.

Authorities did not say if the weapon was a gun or a knife.

“When officers arrived on scene and began their preliminary investigation, it appears as if it was an attempted robbery of this location where the employee of the liquor store fired a weapon and shot the perpetrator,” said Louisville Metro Police Department spokeswoman, Alicia Smiley.

Abulaila was taken to University Hospital, where he later died.

“There were no other persons inside the liquor store at the time of the incident. There were no injuries to the employee of the liquor store itself,” Smiley said.

The clerk police say shot and killed Abulaila returned to work Saturday.

He declined our request for an interview while police are still investigating the shooting.
