Gun Group Denounces Brady Instant Check

Gun Owners of America Executive Director Larry Pratt called November 30 of this year a "dark day in the history of our Republic because this is when the FBI wants to begin to illegally register anyone buying any firearm from a gun dealer."

The FBI, under Phase Two of the Brady Law, takes over the administration of the Instant Background Check on November 30 of this year. Pratt pointed out that "the FBI has openly stated its intention to use Phase Two of Brady as the opportunity to register gun buyers in spite of prohibitions in present federal law."

Pratt called for two things to occur in order to block the FBI's plans to join the ranks of the nation's lawbreakers. "The NRA needs to reverse field and oppose the Instant Background Check which has opened the door to national gun owner registration. And, Congress needs to pass the measure introduced in the last Congress by Sen. Bob Smith (R-NH)."

Smith got a veto-proof vote in the Senate to cut off funding for any system storing gun buyers' names and addresses. There was not sufficient time to pass the measure in the House. "Gun Owners of America looks forward to working with Sen. Smith in the 106th Congress to pass his Brady-blocker, even over the President's veto if necessary."

Pratt added that "The only guarantee of Americans' privacy is to repeal Brady, and GOA will be pursuing that objective in the 106th Congress."
